Brown boobies grow up to 85 cm in length with a wingspan of 1.35 m. They have chocolate-coloured feathers and pale bellies and underwings.

Brown boobies nest on the ground, with each pair laying one or two pale blue eggs.

They feed on fish (especially flying fish) and squid, which they catch by plunging swiftly into the sea.
