White terns are found in tropical oceans all over the world, including on North Keeling Island.

These small, dainty seabirds are all white except for their long black bill and eye-ring. Their wingspan measures up to 85 cm.

White terns breed all year round. They do not build nests, instead laying their eggs on thin branches or palm fronds.
